PCSO stands for Police community support officer, a police abbreviation.

Uniformed civilian member of police staff in England and Wales who patrols neighborhoods, deals with antisocial behavior and supports police officers but has limited powers and no general power of arrest. PCSOs were introduced in 2002.

Example: A PCSO visited the shop to take a statement about the shoplifting incident.

Usage notes

Created under the Police Reform Act 2002 to increase visible patrolling. PCSOs wear uniforms similar to constables but with blue rather than black-and-white checkered bands on some caps and the word "PCSO" on their vests. Many later join the police as constables.
