1. Person of interest
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
Informal label for someone police want to question in connection with a crime, without formally calling them a suspect. The term has no legal definition and does not imply guilt.
Example: Police named the victim's former roommate a POI but stressed that no one has been charged.
The phrase became widely known after the FBI described scientist Steven Hatfill as a person of interest in the 2001 anthrax attacks; he was later exonerated and won a settlement. Civil liberties advocates criticize the label for damaging reputations without due process. In mapping, POI means point of interest.
2. Primary ovarian insufficiency
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Loss of normal ovarian function before age 40, with irregular or absent periods, high FSH and low estrogen. It affects about 1 percent of women and causes infertility, menopausal symptoms and long-term risks to bone and heart health.
Example: Amenorrhea at 32, FSH 72 twice 4 weeks apart: POI, fragile X premutation testing ordered.
Formerly called premature ovarian failure, a term abandoned because ovarian function can fluctuate and some women still conceive. Causes include genetic conditions such as fragile X premutation and Turner syndrome, autoimmune disease and chemotherapy, though most are unexplained. Hormone therapy is recommended until the usual age of menopause.
