PGT stands for Preimplantation genetic testing, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Genetic testing of cells biopsied from IVF embryos before transfer. PGT-A screens for abnormal chromosome numbers, PGT-M tests for specific inherited single-gene conditions, and PGT-SR detects structural chromosome rearrangements.
Example: Both partners cystic fibrosis carriers; IVF with PGT-M, 2 unaffected embryos.
Usage notes
PGT replaced the older terms preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) and diagnosis (PGD). Biopsies are usually taken from the outer layer of the blastocyst (trophectoderm). Whether routine PGT-A improves live birth rates for all patients remains debated, and mosaic embryo results complicate decisions.
