1. Northern Territory
Geography & Places · Australian State and Territory Abbreviations
Sparsely populated federal territory in central and northern Australia, with about 250,000 residents and Darwin as its capital. Self-governing since 1978, it contains Uluru and Kakadu National Park, and its postcodes begin with 08.
Example: The tour departs from Alice Springs NT 0870 at dawn.
Territorians use NT constantly, as in NT News. Because it is a territory, the federal parliament can override its laws, as happened with its voluntary euthanasia act in 1997. In Canada NT is the Northwest Territories, and in Bible references NT means New Testament.
2. New Testament
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
Second part of the Christian Bible, made up of 27 books: four Gospels, Acts, 21 letters and Revelation, written in Greek in the first century AD. All major Christian traditions accept the same 27 books.
Example: She is taking an NT Greek course at the seminary this fall.
The earliest list matching the 27-book canon appears in Athanasius's Easter letter of 367. "Testament" translates a word for covenant. In other contexts NT can mean Northern Territory (Australia) or not tested.
3. Northwest Territories
Geography & Places · Canadian Province and Territory Abbreviations
Northern territory of about 45,000 people with Yellowknife as its capital, which recognizes 11 official languages, more than any other Canadian jurisdiction. Its diamond mines are among the richest in North America, and it shares the postal letter X with Nunavut.
Example: Winter road season in the NT usually runs from late January to March.
The traditional and news abbreviation is N.W.T., often written NWT. Nunavut was split off from the territory in 1999. In Australia NT means the Northern Territory, and in Bible references NT means New Testament.
4. Nice try
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Encouragement typed after a teammate's failed attempt, such as losing a close fight or missing a clutch. Common in Valorant, Counter-Strike and Overwatch.
Example: Nt, you almost had the 1v3, next round's ours.
Sincere "nt" keeps team morale up, but repeated "nt" after obvious mistakes can be read as sarcasm or passive-aggression. Some players add "nt nt" for emphasis. Variants include "ns" (nice shot) for successful plays.
5. Nuchal translucency
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
First-trimester ultrasound measurement of the fluid-filled space at the back of the fetal neck, taken between about 11 and 14 weeks. An increased NT raises the likelihood of chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome and of heart defects.
Example: NT 3.8 mm at 12w3d; genetic counseling and offer of CVS.
NT measurement is combined with maternal blood tests (PAPP-A and hCG) and age in the first-trimester combined screen. A thickened NT with normal chromosomes still warrants a detailed fetal heart scan. Sonographers require specific certification for this measurement. In physical exam notes NT means nontender.
6. New Technology
Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations
Line of Microsoft operating systems begun with Windows NT 3.1 in 1993, built on a new kernel independent of MS-DOS. Every Windows release since Windows XP, including Windows 10 and 11, runs on the NT architecture.
Example: Windows 11 still reports itself as NT 10.0 in its kernel version string.
Dave Cutler, formerly of Digital Equipment Corporation, led NT's development. The letters were popularly read as "New Technology", though team members have said they first referred to the Intel i860 "N10" processor the system initially targeted. NTFS, the NT file system, carries the name. Windows 2000 was NT 5.0 and Windows XP NT 5.1.
7. Net tonnage
Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations
Measure of a ship's useful cargo or passenger-carrying volume, calculated from the volume of its cargo spaces under the 1969 tonnage convention. Port dues and some canal fees are based on net tonnage.
Example: Harbor fees are charged per unit of NT, so the shipowner checked the tonnage certificate closely.
Like gross tonnage, net tonnage is dimensionless and not a weight. It is always lower than gross tonnage. The Suez and Panama Canals use their own tonnage systems for tolls. NT also commonly means Northern Territory in Australia and New Testament.
8. Nose tackle
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Defensive lineman who lines up directly over the center ("on the nose"), usually in a 3-4 defense. His job is to absorb double teams and stop runs up the middle so that linebackers can make the tackles.
Example: At 340 pounds, the NT rarely leaves the field on first and second down.
Also called nose guard, especially in college football. Nose tackles are often the heaviest players on the defense; Vince Wilfork and Casey Hampton were well-known examples. Their value rarely shows in statistics, since tackles and sacks usually go to teammates.
