NTFS stands for New Technology File System, a computer abbreviation.
Default file system for Windows system drives, supporting very large files and volumes, permissions, encryption, compression, journaling and shadow copies for backups. macOS can read NTFS drives but cannot write to them without extra software.
Example: My Mac can open files on the NTFS drive but won't let me save anything to it.
Usage notes
Microsoft introduced NTFS with Windows NT 3.1 in 1993. Its journal lets Windows recover from crashes without scanning the whole disk. Linux gained a fast read-write driver, ntfs3, contributed by Paragon Software in 2021. Microsoft's newer ReFS file system targets servers and storage pools rather than everyday PCs.
