OS/2 stands for Operating System/2, a computer abbreviation.
Operating system developed jointly by IBM and Microsoft and released in 1987 as a successor to DOS. After the partnership ended, IBM continued it alone, and OS/2 found lasting niches in banks, ATMs and transit systems.
Example: Many bank ATMs still ran OS/2 well into the 2000s.
Usage notes
Microsoft left the project to focus on Windows, and its planned OS/2 3.0 evolved into Windows NT. IBM's OS/2 Warp 3 (1994) and Warp 4 (1996) won praise for stability but lost the consumer market to Windows 95. The name matched IBM's PS/2 hardware line. ArcaOS, sold since 2017, keeps the platform alive for legacy users.
