1. Optical mark recognition

Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations

Technology that reads filled-in bubbles, checkboxes and marks on paper forms, used for multiple-choice answer sheets, surveys, ballots and lottery slips.

Example: Use a No. 2 pencil and fill each bubble completely so the OMR scanner reads your answers.

OMR detects whether a mark is present in a known position instead of recognizing letters, which makes it fast and very accurate. Scantron forms became so common in US schools from the 1970s onward that the brand name is used generically for bubble sheets. Modern systems use ordinary image scanners and software rather than dedicated mark readers.

2. Omani rial

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Oman's currency, pegged to the US dollar at 0.3845 rial (about 2.60 dollars) and among the three highest-valued currency units in the world. It is divided into 1,000 baisa.

Example: The Muscat hotel quoted OMR 65 per night.

Oman issued its own currency in 1970, replacing the Gulf rupee and Indian rupee used earlier. The baisa name echoes the Indian paisa, a trace of long trade ties across the Arabian Sea. The Central Bank of Oman maintains the peg.
