1. Next of kin
Military · Military Term Abbreviations · also used in medicine
Closest relatives of a service member, recorded on the DD Form 93 Record of Emergency Data and notified in person if the member is killed, missing or seriously injured. The primary next of kin is usually a spouse or, for unmarried members, a parent.
Example: Names of the fallen are being withheld until 24 hours after NOK notification.
Military casualty notifications are made in person by a uniformed notification officer, usually with a chaplain, and the Army generally avoids notifications late at night. News releases of casualty names traditionally wait until the next of kin have been told. Hospitals and police also use NOK in civilian settings.
2. Norwegian krone
Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations
Norway's currency, issued by Norges Bank and divided into 100 ore. Its value is influenced by oil and gas prices, Norway's largest exports.
Example: A beer in an Oslo bar costs around NOK 120.
Oil revenues are invested abroad through the Government Pension Fund Global, the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, which partly insulates the krone from oil-price swings. Norwegians voted against EU membership in 1972 and 1994. Prices are written kr, and the plural is kroner.
