NOFORN stands for Not releasable to foreign nationals, a military term abbreviation.
Classification dissemination control marking that prohibits sharing the marked information with any foreign government, organization or person, even close allies, without specific approval. It appears in the classification banner of documents.
Example: The report was stamped SECRET//NOFORN, so it could not be shared at the NATO meeting.
Usage notes
NOFORN is often contrasted with "REL TO" markings, which authorize release to specific countries, such as REL TO USA, FVEY for the Five Eyes allies. Leaks of NOFORN material have caused diplomatic strains. Pronounced "NO-for-n."
