1. Tasmania

Geography & Places · Australian State and Territory Abbreviations

Island state about 240 kilometres south of the mainland across Bass Strait, with Hobart as its capital. Known as Van Diemen's Land until 1856, it has roughly 40 percent of its area in reserves and national parks, and its postcodes start with 7.

Example: The ferry booking confirmation was sent to a Launceston TAS 7250 address.

Tas. or Tas is common in running text, and Tassie is the everyday nickname. Hobart, founded in 1804, is Australia's second-oldest capital city after Sydney. The Tasmanian devil, now found in the wild only on the island, is the state emblem.

2. Tool-assisted speedrun

Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations · also used in texting

Speedrun created with emulator tools such as frame-by-frame input and save states, producing theoretically perfect play, often impossible for humans. TAS runs are clearly labeled and separate from real-time runs.

Example: The TAS beats the game in under five minutes using glitches no human could hit.

The TASVideos community has archived tool-assisted runs since the early 2000s. Passing off a TAS as a real-time run is considered cheating. Live charity speedrunning events such as Games Done Quick feature human runs.

3. True airspeed

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Actual speed of an aircraft through the surrounding air mass, obtained by correcting calibrated airspeed for altitude and temperature. TAS is used for flight planning and entered on flight plans; it differs from ground speed by the effect of wind.

Example: Our filed TAS is 450 knots, but with the headwind we'll see a ground speed near 380.

A rule of thumb adds about 2 percent to indicated airspeed per 1,000 feet of altitude to estimate TAS. Jets at high altitude fly by Mach number rather than airspeed. Modern air data computers calculate and display TAS continuously.
