1. Transient global amnesia

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Sudden episode of inability to form new memories, typically lasting several hours, during which the person remains alert, knows who they are and repeatedly asks the same questions. It mainly affects people aged 50 to 70 and resolves within 24 hours.

Example: Sudden repetitive questioning after a cold swim, neuro exam otherwise normal, resolved in 6 hours: TGA.

Triggers often include sudden immersion in cold or hot water, strenuous exertion, sexual intercourse or emotional stress. MRI performed a day or two later may show tiny diffusion abnormalities in the hippocampus. The episode is not a TIA or seizure and does not raise stroke risk, and recurrences are uncommon. In congenital cardiology TGA means transposition of the great arteries.

2. Transposition of the great arteries

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Congenital defect in which the aorta arises from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery from the left, creating two parallel circulations. Survival after birth depends on mixing through a PDA, PFO or septal defect, and the arterial switch operation in the first weeks of life is the standard repair.

Example: Cyanotic newborn with an egg-on-a-string heart on x-ray; d-TGA confirmed, prostaglandin started and balloon septostomy planned.

D-TGA is the classic cyanotic form; L-TGA, or congenitally corrected transposition, also swaps the ventricles and may go unnoticed until adulthood. The arterial switch (Jatene) operation, first performed successfully in 1975, replaced the older atrial switch procedures (Mustard and Senning), which left the right ventricle pumping to the body. In neurology TGA means transient global amnesia.

3. Thermogravimetric analysis

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Technique that continuously weighs a sample as it is heated, revealing temperatures at which it loses water, decomposes or oxidizes. TGA measures moisture and filler content in plastics, the thermal stability of materials and the composition of minerals and catalysts.

Example: TGA under nitrogen showed 5% mass loss at 320 °C and 28% inorganic residue at 800 °C.

Instruments combine a sensitive microbalance with a furnace and can switch gases, for example from nitrogen to air to burn off carbon black. Coupling TGA with infrared spectroscopy or mass spectrometry identifies the gases released at each step. Results are plotted as mass percent against temperature.

4. The Game Awards

Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations

Annual video game awards ceremony held each December, produced and hosted by Geoff Keighley, combining awards with major game announcements and trailers.

Example: The new sequel was revealed during TGA with a surprise trailer.

First held in 2014, after Keighley's involvement with the earlier Spike Video Game Awards. Its Game of the Year award is the most widely watched. The show is streamed free on many platforms and draws large global audiences.
