Charting shorthand for a seizure, a transient episode of abnormal, excessive electrical activity in the brain causing convulsions, staring spells, abnormal sensations or altered awareness. "Sz precautions" orders padding of bed rails, suction and oxygen at the bedside.
Example: Witnessed Sz at home lasting 2 minutes with postictal confusion; first unprovoked event.
About 1 in 10 people will have a seizure at some point in their life, but only a minority develop epilepsy, defined as two unprovoked seizures more than 24 hours apart or one with a high recurrence risk. Charts also use "sz-free" for seizure-free intervals that determine driving eligibility, which varies by US state. Capital S, lowercase z is standard.
