1. Requisition

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Approved request to fill a position, created by a hiring manager and authorized by finance or HR, which then becomes a tracked job opening in the applicant tracking system. Recruiters measure workload by the number of open reqs they carry.

Example: We finally got the req approved, so the role posts on Monday.

Each req has a number that ties candidates, offers and costs to a budgeted headcount. A "req freeze" stops new hiring without formal layoffs. Usually written in lowercase in conversation.

2. Required (req.)

Writing & Everyday · Classified Ad Abbreviations

Marks a qualification, document or item as mandatory in job ads, rental listings and forms, as in "valid driver's license req." or "refs req."

Example: CDL Class A req., 2 years tractor-trailer exp., home every weekend.

Variants include req'd and reqd. In hiring and purchasing, "req" also means a requisition, as in "open a req" for a new position. Rental ads may say "refs req.," meaning references from past landlords are needed.
