Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations · also used in the military

Elimination of positions to cut costs or restructure, in which the jobs themselves are abolished rather than employees being dismissed for performance. Selection usually follows criteria such as seniority, role or business unit.

Example: The memo said the RIF affects 8% of staff, mostly in middle management.

Federal agencies follow detailed RIF rules based on tenure, veterans' preference, length of service and performance, and large-scale federal RIFs in 2025 brought the term into headlines. In the private sector, a RIF may trigger WARN Act notice, and severance releases offered to workers 40 or older in a group layoff must allow 45 days for consideration.

2. Rifampin

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

First-line antituberculosis antibiotic, known as rifampicin outside the US. It is part of the RIPE regimen for active TB, used alone for 4 months to treat latent TB and combined with other drugs for staphylococcal infections.

Example: RIF 600 mg daily; counsel that urine and tears will turn orange.

Rifampin is one of the strongest inducers of liver enzymes, especially CYP3A4, so it lowers levels of oral contraceptives, warfarin, many HIV drugs and transplant drugs. It turns urine, sweat and tears orange-red and can permanently stain soft contact lenses. Also abbreviated RMP.
