PZA stands for Pyrazinamide, a drug abbreviation.
Antituberculosis drug used during the first two months of treatment for active TB, where it kills slowly dividing bacteria in acidic environments and allows the total course to be shortened.
Example: PZA 1,500 mg daily for the intensive phase; check uric acid if joint pain develops.
Usage notes
Adding pyrazinamide shortened standard TB therapy from nine months to six. It raises uric acid and can cause gout attacks and liver injury. Mycobacterium bovis, the cause of bovine TB and the basis of the BCG vaccine strain, is naturally resistant to it.
