PHT stands for Phenytoin, a drug abbreviation.
Older antiseizure drug used for focal and tonic-clonic seizures and status epilepticus. It follows saturable (zero-order) kinetics, so small dose changes can cause large jumps in blood levels. Brand name Dilantin.
Example: PHT level 8.2 with albumin 2.4; corrected level about 15, no change.
Usage notes
Total phenytoin levels are corrected for low albumin, or a free level is measured, because only unbound drug is active. IV phenytoin must not exceed 50 mg/min in adults because of arrhythmia risk, and leakage can cause "purple glove syndrome". Long-term effects include gum overgrowth, coarse facial features and bone loss.
