1. Performance-enhancing drug
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Any substance taken to improve athletic or physical performance, including anabolic steroids, erythropoietin, growth hormone, stimulants and, in precision sports, beta-blockers. Sports bodies ban most of them.
Example: The league suspended him 80 games after a positive test for a PED.
The World Anti-Doping Agency publishes an updated Prohibited List each year. High-profile cases such as the BALCO investigation in 2003 and Lance Armstrong's 2012 sanctions drew public attention to PEDs. In clinical shorthand "peds" more often means pediatrics.
2. Price elasticity of demand
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Measure of how responsive the quantity demanded of a good is to a change in its price, calculated as the percentage change in quantity divided by the percentage change in price. Demand is elastic when the absolute value exceeds 1 and inelastic when it is below 1.
Example: Cigarettes have a low PED, so tax increases raise revenue without cutting sales much.
Necessities, addictive goods and products with few substitutes tend to have inelastic demand, while luxuries and goods with many substitutes are more elastic. Raising the price of an inelastic product increases revenue. Because PED is negative for most goods, economists usually quote its absolute value.
