PGE2 stands for Prostaglandin E2 (dinoprostone), a drug abbreviation.
Prostaglandin used to soften and open the cervix before labor induction, given as a vaginal insert (Cervidil) or gel (Prepidil). It is also the body's own mediator of fever and inflammation.
Example: Bishop score 3: PGE2 10 mg vaginal insert placed at 2000; remove if tachysystole.
Usage notes
The Cervidil insert can be removed quickly if the uterus contracts too frequently, an advantage over misoprostol. PGE2 is not used after a prior cesarean section because of uterine rupture risk. NSAIDs reduce fever and pain largely by blocking PGE2 production.
