RIG stands for Rabies immune globulin, a drug abbreviation.
Antibodies against rabies given once, along with the first dose of rabies vaccine, to people exposed to a possibly rabid animal who have never been vaccinated. As much as possible of the dose is infiltrated into and around the wound.
Example: Bat exposure: HRIG 20 IU/kg infiltrated at wound, vaccine on days 0, 3, 7, 14.
Usage notes
In the US, human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) is used; some countries use equine products (ERIG). RIG is not given to people who were previously vaccinated, since they need only two vaccine boosters. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, making prompt post-exposure care essential.
