SAMe stands for S-adenosylmethionine, a drug abbreviation.

Naturally occurring compound involved in methylation reactions, sold in the US as a dietary supplement for depression, osteoarthritis and liver health. In parts of Europe it is a prescription medication.

Example: Patient started SAMe 400 mg BID for mood; discussed interaction with sertraline.

Usage notes

Pronounced "sammy". SAMe became available as a US supplement in 1999. Some studies suggest modest antidepressant effects, but evidence quality is limited. Combining it with serotonergic antidepressants may raise the risk of serotonin syndrome, and it can trigger mania in bipolar disorder. Products vary in stability and actual content.
