SSZ stands for Sulfasalazine, a drug abbreviation.

Anti-inflammatory drug combining a sulfa antibiotic with 5-aminosalicylic acid, used for ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory arthritis. Bacteria in the colon split it into its two active parts.

Example: SSZ EN-tabs 1 g BID with methotrexate and HCQ (triple therapy).

Usage notes

Sulfasalazine can turn urine and skin yellow-orange and stain contact lenses. It causes reversible low sperm counts in men and requires folic acid supplementation. People with sulfonamide allergy or G6PD deficiency may not tolerate it. Combined with methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine, it forms "triple therapy" for rheumatoid arthritis.
