1. Tungsten inert gas (welding)

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations

Arc welding process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and an inert shielding gas, usually argon, with filler rod added by hand. TIG produces precise, clean welds on thin metals, stainless steel, aluminum and titanium, but it is slower and requires more skill than MIG.

Example: The bike frame's titanium joints were TIG welded with a full argon purge inside the tubes.

The formal name is gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Russell Meredith developed the process at Northrop around 1941 to weld magnesium aircraft parts, and it was marketed as Heliarc because it used helium. Alternating current is used for aluminum to break up its oxide layer.

2. Time in grade

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Length of time a member has held the current pay grade, counted from the date of rank, used to determine eligibility for promotion and for retiring at a given grade.

Example: He meets the TIG requirement for staff sergeant but still needs the Advanced Leader Course.

Officers generally must serve three years in grade to retire in grades above O-4, though waivers exist. Enlisted promotion systems combine time-in-grade and time-in-service minimums. Time in grade also breaks ties on some promotion lists and affects seniority among members of the same rank.

3. Tetanus immune globulin

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Human antibodies against tetanus toxin, given for tetanus-prone wounds in people who have had fewer than three tetanus vaccine doses or an unknown history, and as part of treatment for active tetanus.

Example: Dirty wound, vaccine history unknown: Tdap plus TIG 250 units IM in opposite arm.

TIG neutralizes circulating toxin but cannot reverse toxin already bound to nerves. It is given at a different site from the tetanus vaccine. Active tetanus is rare in countries with high vaccination rates, but most US cases occur in people who never completed the primary series.
