GTAW stands for Gas tungsten arc welding, an engineering abbreviation.
American Welding Society name for the process commonly called TIG welding, in which an arc between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece is shielded by inert gas. Filler metal may be added separately, or thin parts may be fused without it.
Example: The procedure specifies GTAW for the root pass and SMAW for the fill and cap.
Usage notes
Welding procedure specifications and codes such as ASME Section IX use the AWS process names rather than shop terms. GTAW is preferred for root passes on critical pipe welds because it gives excellent control and penetration.
