1. Human Rights Campaign
Organizations & Companies · Nonprofit Abbreviations
Largest US LGBTQ advocacy organization, which lobbies for legal protections, supports candidates and publishes the Corporate Equality Index rating companies' policies.
Example: The company scored 100 on the HRC Corporate Equality Index.
Founded in 1980 as a political action committee, it is known for its blue-and-yellow equal-sign logo, which spread on social media in a red version during 2013 Supreme Court marriage cases. In politics, HRC also refers to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
2. Rockwell hardness C (scale)
Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations · also used in measurement
Hardness measured on the Rockwell C scale by pressing a diamond cone into a material under a 150-kilogram-force load and measuring how deeply it penetrates. HRC is the standard hardness rating for hardened steels such as knives, tools, bearings and gears.
Example: The chef's knife is hardened to 60-61 HRC, so it holds an edge but needs careful sharpening.
Hugh and Stanley Rockwell developed the tester in the early 20th century for inspecting bearing races. Softer metals use other scales, such as Rockwell B with a steel ball. Most kitchen knives fall between about 54 and 62 HRC; harder steels hold an edge longer but are more brittle.
