HSUS stands for Humane Society of the United States, a nonprofit abbreviation.
National animal protection organization that campaigns on issues such as factory farming, puppy mills, wildlife trade and animal testing, and supports sanctuaries and rescue operations. It is not the parent of local humane societies.
Example: HSUS rescue teams removed more than 100 dogs from the puppy mill.
Usage notes
Founded in 1954, it is based in the Washington, D.C., area and operates internationally through Humane Society International. In 2025 the two organizations began operating under the name Humane World for Animals. Like the ASPCA, it is often confused with local shelters that use "humane society" in their names.
