HAZOP stands for Hazard and operability study, an engineering abbreviation.

Structured team review of a process design, usually based on P&IDs, that systematically applies guide words such as "no," "more," "less" and "reverse" to each part of a process to identify how deviations could cause hazards or operating problems.

Example: The HAZOP found that a blocked outlet could overpressure the vessel, so a relief valve was added.

Usage notes

The method was developed at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in Britain in the 1960s and is standardized in IEC 61882. HAZOPs are required or expected for new and modified plants in the chemical, oil and gas and pharmaceutical industries. Sessions are led by an independent facilitator and recorded line by line.
