SMAW stands for Shielded metal arc welding, an engineering abbreviation.
Manual arc welding process, commonly called stick welding, that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux. The coating melts to form shielding gas and slag that protect the weld, so SMAW works outdoors, in wind and on rusty steel with simple, portable equipment.
Example: Field crews used SMAW with E7018 rods to repair the bridge girder on site.
Usage notes
Electrodes are classified by AWS codes: in E7018, "70" means 70,000 psi minimum tensile strength, "1" all positions, and "8" a low-hydrogen coating. Oscar Kjellberg of Sweden, founder of ESAB, patented the coated electrode in the early 1900s. Slag must be chipped off between passes.
