ULS stands for Ultimate limit state, an engineering abbreviation.
In limit state design, the condition beyond which a structure would collapse or suffer failure of a member, such as rupture, buckling or loss of equilibrium. Designers check that factored loads at the ULS do not exceed the factored strength of each element.
Example: The beam passes the ULS check for bending but fails the serviceability deflection limit.
Usage notes
Limit state design, used by the Eurocodes and the US LRFD method, also checks serviceability limit states (SLS), such as excessive deflection, vibration or cracking that would impair use without causing collapse. Partial safety factors are applied separately to loads and material strengths.
