UTS stands for Ultimate tensile strength, an engineering abbreviation.

Maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched before it breaks, measured in megapascals or pounds per square inch. It is a basic property on material data sheets, alongside yield strength, the stress at which permanent deformation begins.

Example: ASTM A36 structural steel has a UTS of 400 to 550 MPa and a yield strength of at least 250 MPa.

Usage notes

Engineers normally design to yield strength rather than UTS, since parts must not permanently deform in service. UTS is found from a tensile test that pulls a standard specimen until it fractures, producing a stress-strain curve. The "36" in A36 refers to its 36,000 psi minimum yield strength.
