RTU stands for Rooftop unit, an engineering abbreviation.
Packaged HVAC unit installed on the roof of a commercial building that combines fans, filters, cooling (and often gas heating or a heat pump) in one weatherproof cabinet, supplying conditioned air through ducts below. RTUs are common on retail stores, restaurants and low-rise offices.
Example: The supermarket replaced six aging RTUs with high-efficiency heat pump units.
Usage notes
RTUs are popular because they are self-contained and easy to replace by crane. In SCADA systems RTU means remote terminal unit, a field device that collects data and relays commands, so context determines the meaning.
