PLM stands for Product lifecycle management, an engineering abbreviation.

Strategy and software for managing all information about a product from concept and design through manufacturing, service and retirement, including CAD files, bills of materials, change orders and requirements. PLM gives engineering, manufacturing and suppliers a single source of truth.

Example: All drawing revisions must be released through the PLM system before parts can be ordered.

Usage notes

American Motors Corporation is often credited with an early PLM approach in the mid-1980s while developing the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Leading vendors include Siemens Teamcenter, Dassault Systèmes ENOVIA and PTC Windchill. PLM differs from ERP, which manages business resources such as orders, inventory and finance.
