1. Enterprise resource planning
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Integrated business software that runs core processes such as finance, procurement, inventory, manufacturing, sales orders and HR on a shared database. An ERP system replaces separate departmental applications so that a sale, for example, automatically updates stock, revenue and receivables.
Example: Go-live for the new ERP is set for January 1, so all open purchase orders must be closed in the old system by December 15.
The research firm Gartner is credited with coining the term around 1990, building on earlier MRP (material requirements planning) systems. Major vendors include SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Infor. ERP implementations are notoriously costly and risky, and failed rollouts have disrupted shipments and payroll at well-known companies. In finance, ERP also abbreviates equity risk premium.
2. Exposure and response prevention
Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations
Behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder in which patients deliberately face feared thoughts, objects or situations in gradual steps while refraining from compulsions, allowing anxiety to decrease on its own. It is the most effective psychotherapy for OCD.
Example: ERP hierarchy: touching bathroom doorknob without handwashing, rated 70 SUDS; practice daily.
British psychologist Victor Meyer pioneered the approach in the 1960s. Exposures are often planned using a hierarchy rated in subjective units of distress. ERP is usually delivered as part of CBT and can be combined with SSRIs. In business, ERP means enterprise resource planning software.
3. Event-related potential
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations
Small voltage change in the brain's electrical activity, recorded by EEG and time-locked to a specific event such as a sound, image or word. Averaging many trials reveals ERP components that track attention, recognition and language processing with millisecond precision.
Example: The N400 ERP was larger for sentences ending in an unexpected word.
Components are named by polarity and timing: the P300, discovered by Samuel Sutton and colleagues in 1965, is a positive wave about 300 milliseconds after a rare target, and the N400, reported by Marta Kutas and Steven Hillyard in 1980, reflects meaning processing. In business ERP means enterprise resource planning.
4. Equity risk premium
Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations
Extra return investors expect from holding stocks instead of risk-free government bonds, compensating them for the higher risk of equities. It is a key input to CAPM, WACC and long-term asset allocation.
Example: Our valuation assumes a 5.5 percent ERP over the 10-year Treasury yield.
Estimates for the US market usually fall between about 4 and 6 percent, depending on whether they rest on historical returns or forward-looking implied measures; NYU professor Aswath Damodaran publishes widely used monthly estimates. Also called the market risk premium. In business software, ERP means enterprise resource planning.
