1. Epiretinal membrane

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Thin layer of scar-like tissue that forms on the surface of the macula, sometimes causing distorted or blurry central vision. Many are mild and need no treatment; symptomatic membranes can be peeled off during vitrectomy.

Example: ERM OD with metamorphopsia, VA 20/50; refer for vitrectomy with membrane peel.

Also called macular pucker or cellophane maculopathy. Most are associated with aging and posterior vitreous detachment, while others follow retinal tears, surgery or inflammation. OCT shows the membrane and any distortion of the retina.

2. Enterprise risk management

Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations

Structured, organization-wide approach to identifying, assessing and responding to all significant risks, whether financial, operational, strategic or compliance-related, rather than managing each in a separate silo. ERM programs maintain a risk register, define risk appetite and report top risks to the board.

Example: The ERM team ranked cyberattack, key-supplier failure and interest-rate shocks as our three highest residual risks.

The two most cited frameworks are COSO's Enterprise Risk Management framework (2004, updated 2017) and the ISO 31000 standard (2009, updated 2018). Ratings agencies and regulators increasingly expect boards to oversee ERM. In economics, ERM refers instead to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism.

3. Exchange Rate Mechanism

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

European system for limiting fluctuations between member currencies, introduced in 1979 as part of the European Monetary System and replaced by ERM II in 1999. Countries must spend at least two years in ERM II before adopting the euro.

Example: The pound's forced exit from the ERM on Black Wednesday in 1992 cost the UK Treasury billions.

On Black Wednesday, September 16, 1992, speculators including George Soros's fund bet against sterling, forcing the UK to withdraw from the mechanism. ERM II pegs participating currencies to the euro within a band, usually plus or minus 15 percent, while Denmark's krone uses a narrower band. In business, ERM means enterprise risk management.
