GAT stands for Goldmann applanation tonometry, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Standard method of measuring eye pressure in which a small prism attached to a slit lamp gently flattens a fixed area of the numbed cornea, with fluorescein dye showing the alignment. It is the reference against which other tonometers are compared.
Example: IOP by GAT 22 OD and 21 OS at 10:30 a.m.; CCT 520 microns.
Usage notes
Developed by Swiss ophthalmologist Hans Goldmann in the 1950s. The prism flattens a circle 3.06 mm in diameter, a size chosen so that corneal rigidity and tear film forces roughly cancel out. Readings are affected by corneal thickness and scarring.
