1. Implantable collamer lens

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Thin artificial lens implanted inside the eye in front of the natural lens, behind the iris, to correct moderate to high nearsightedness without removing tissue. It is an option for people unsuitable for laser surgery because of thin corneas or very high prescriptions.

Example: High myopia -11.00 with thin corneas; ICL recommended rather than LASIK.

The Visian ICL received FDA approval in 2005; "collamer" refers to its collagen copolymer material. Because the natural lens is kept, near focusing is preserved in younger patients. Risks include raised eye pressure and cataract formation. The lens can be removed if needed.

2. I can't lie

Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations

Prefaces an honest admission or confession, similar to NGL (not gonna lie). It became a trending filler in Gen Z and Gen Alpha texts and captions around 2024 and 2025.

Example: Icl, that movie made me cry a little at the end.

Often stacked with other trending abbreviations in strings such as "ts pmo icl," which can be baffling to older readers. Mostly used by teens on TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram. Informal and harmless in tone, but unclear outside young peer groups.

3. In-context learning

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

The ability of large language models to perform a new task from instructions or a few examples placed in the prompt, without any change to the model's weights. Few-shot prompting is a form of in-context learning.

Example: With three labeled examples in the prompt, ICL got the model to classify tickets correctly.

Highlighted in OpenAI's 2020 GPT-3 paper "Language Models are Few-Shot Learners". Results depend on the choice and order of examples. Longer context windows allow many-shot prompting with hundreds of examples.
