1. Laser peripheral iridotomy

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Office laser procedure that makes a tiny hole in the outer edge of the iris, letting fluid bypass the pupil and deepening the drainage angle. It treats and prevents angle-closure glaucoma.

Example: Narrow angles OU with occludable angles on gonioscopy; LPI OD today, OS next week.

After LPI, some patients notice glare or a line of light if the opening is not covered by the eyelid. Studies such as the ZAP trial (2019) found only modest benefit for people who merely have narrow angles without other signs. Pronounced as letters.

2. Lines per inch (lpi)

Units & Measurements · Data Unit Abbreviations

Halftone screen frequency in offset and newspaper printing: how many rows of halftone dots fit per inch. Newspapers print at roughly 85 to 100 lpi and glossy magazines at 133 to 175 lpi.

Example: Prepare images at 300 ppi for the magazine's 150 lpi screen.

A rule of thumb sets image resolution at 1.5 to 2 times the lpi, the origin of the familiar 300 ppi standard for print. The same unit describes the lens density of lenticular prints, the ridged images that change with viewing angle.
