MGD stands for Meibomian gland dysfunction, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Blockage or poor function of the oil glands along the eyelid margins, which normally supply the oily layer that keeps tears from evaporating. It is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye and often accompanies blepharitis and rosacea.
Example: MGD OU with thick, toothpaste-like secretions; warm compresses twice daily, lid hygiene.
Usage notes
Treatments include warm compresses, lid massage, in-office thermal pulsation devices, intense pulsed light and, in some cases, oral doxycycline. Demodex mite blepharitis can contribute and has a specific prescription treatment approved in 2023. Pronounced as letters.
