1. Lawful permanent resident
Government & Politics · Public Program Abbreviations
Noncitizen authorized to live and work in the United States permanently, holding a permanent resident card, commonly called a green card. LPRs can generally apply for citizenship after five years, or three if married to a US citizen.
Example: As an LPR, she can travel abroad but must avoid staying away for more than a year.
Green cards are issued through family, employment, refugee or asylum status, the diversity lottery and other categories. LPRs can lose status through long absences or certain crimes. Conditional residents, such as spouses married less than two years, receive two-year cards and must remove the conditions.
2. Laryngopharyngeal reflux
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Backflow of stomach contents up to the throat and voice box, causing hoarseness, chronic throat clearing, a lump-in-the-throat feeling and cough, often without typical heartburn. It is sometimes called "silent reflux".
Example: LPR suspected: hoarseness, throat clearing, laryngoscopy with posterior laryngeal edema; diet changes.
Diagnosis is difficult because laryngeal findings are nonspecific and many patients do not respond to proton pump inhibitors. Questionnaires such as the Reflux Symptom Index are used to track symptoms. Lifestyle measures include avoiding late meals, alcohol and caffeine. It is related to but distinct from GERD.
