1. Intraocular pressure
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Fluid pressure inside the eye, measured in millimeters of mercury, normally about 10–21 mmHg. Raised pressure is the main modifiable risk factor for glaucoma, and lowering it is the only proven way to slow glaucoma damage.
Example: IOP 28 OD, 17 OS by applanation; start latanoprost OD at bedtime.
Goldmann applanation tonometry is the reference method; air-puff and rebound tonometers are used for screening. Thin corneas make readings look falsely low and thick corneas falsely high. Elevated pressure without optic nerve damage is called ocular hypertension. In mental health IOP means intensive outpatient program.
2. Intensive outpatient program
Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations
Structured mental health or substance use treatment that provides several hours of group and individual therapy a few days a week, often about 9–15 hours weekly, while patients live at home and keep up with work or school. It serves as a step down from hospitalization or a step up from routine outpatient care.
Example: Discharged from inpatient unit to adolescent IOP, 3 hours daily, 4 days per week.
IOP corresponds to ASAM level 2.1 in addiction treatment. Programs commonly include group therapy, medication management and family sessions. Evening programs allow working adults to attend. In ophthalmology IOP means intraocular pressure, an unrelated measurement.
