The only US state made up entirely of islands, about 2,400 miles from California. Annexed in 1898 after the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, it became the 50th state on August 21, 1959; Honolulu on Oahu is the capital, and the Aloha State observes no daylight saving time.

Hawaii is never abbreviated in AP style, and the Bluebook's Haw. is about the only traditional short form. HI was assigned in 1963. The official spelling Hawaiʻi includes the ʻokina, which postal addresses omit. Mainland retailers often group HI with AK and the territories because ground delivery is impossible.
