GAD-7 stands for Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale, a psychology abbreviation also used in medicine.

Seven-question screening and severity measure for anxiety, asking how often over the past two weeks a person has felt nervous, unable to stop worrying, restless or irritable. Scores range from 0 to 21, with 5, 10 and 15 marking mild, moderate and severe anxiety.

Example: The patient's GAD-7 score dropped from 16 to 7 after eight weeks of therapy.

Usage notes

Robert Spitzer and colleagues published the scale in 2006. Although designed for generalized anxiety, it also screens reasonably well for panic, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress. Like the PHQ-9, it is free and widely used in primary care, telehealth and research.
