1. Item response theory
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations
Family of statistical models that relate a person's level on an underlying trait, such as ability, to the probability of answering each test item correctly, taking into account each item's difficulty and discrimination. IRT underlies modern standardized testing and computerized adaptive tests.
Example: The exam uses IRT so that scores on different test forms are placed on the same scale.
Danish mathematician Georg Rasch published his model in 1960, and Frederic Lord developed related theory in the United States. Computerized adaptive tests, such as some versions of the GRE and GMAT, select each next question based on IRT estimates of the test-taker's ability.
2. In regard to
Writing & Everyday · Email and Office Abbreviations
Introduces the subject of a message, similar to "regarding" or "about." It is used chiefly in US military and government email and in police reports, where it may also be expanded as "in reference to."
Example: IRT the training schedule, all personnel must complete the module by 15 May.
Police shorthand uses IRT in phrases like "responded IRT a disturbance." The underlying phrase is "in regard to"; usage guides treat "in regards to" as nonstandard. In other fields IRT stands for item response theory in educational testing, and for the Interborough Rapid Transit, a historic New York City subway company.
