IAT stands for Implicit Association Test, a psychology abbreviation.
Computer-based reaction-time task that measures how quickly people pair concepts, such as faces of different groups, with evaluative words like "good" and "bad." Faster pairings are taken to reveal automatic, implicit associations that people may not report or even be aware of.
Example: Millions of visitors have taken an IAT on the Project Implicit website.
Usage notes
Anthony Greenwald, Debbie McGhee and Jordan Schwartz introduced the IAT in 1998. It became famous in discussions of implicit bias, but research has found modest test-retest reliability and weak prediction of individual behavior, so experts caution against using it to diagnose individuals or in hiring decisions.
