1. Natural language processing

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

The field of AI concerned with enabling computers to process, understand and generate human language, covering translation, sentiment analysis, summarization, speech interfaces and chatbots.

Example: The NLP pipeline tags every review as positive, negative or mixed and pulls out product names.

Roots go back to the 1954 Georgetown-IBM machine translation demonstration and Joseph Weizenbaum's ELIZA chatbot of 1966. The field moved from hand-written rules to statistical methods in the 1990s and to neural networks in the 2010s, and transformers now dominate. Not to be confused with neuro-linguistic programming, a self-help and coaching method that shares the letters.

2. No light perception

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Complete absence of light perception in an eye, the lowest level on the visual acuity scale, indicating total blindness in that eye. It is tested with a bright light while the other eye is completely covered.

Example: VA OS NLP after end-stage neovascular glaucoma; painful blind eye, discuss options.

An NLP eye has no prospect of useful vision recovery in most conditions. Painful blind eyes may be treated with comfort measures or, occasionally, removal. In computing NLP means natural language processing, an unrelated field.
