NeRF stands for Neural radiance field, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A technique that trains a neural network to represent a 3D scene from a set of 2D photos, so new views can be rendered from any angle with realistic lighting and reflections.
Example: We captured the showroom with 80 phone photos and rendered a walkthrough from a NeRF.
Usage notes
Introduced by researchers from UC Berkeley, Google and UC San Diego in 2020. Training was originally slow, but later methods such as NVIDIA's Instant NGP cut it to minutes or seconds. 3D Gaussian splatting (2023) has become a faster alternative for many uses.
