NMT stands for Neural machine translation, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
Machine translation that uses neural networks trained on large parallel corpora to translate whole sentences at once, producing far more fluent output than earlier phrase-based systems. Google Translate and DeepL use NMT.
Example: After the switch to NMT, the translated manuals needed far less human editing.
Usage notes
Sequence-to-sequence models with attention emerged in 2014 and 2015, and Google moved Google Translate to neural translation in 2016. The transformer architecture was first presented for translation in 2017. Weak spots remain in rare languages, idioms and specialized terminology.
