1. Montana
Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations
The Treasure State, also called Big Sky Country, was admitted on November 8, 1889, as the 41st state. It is the fourth-largest state by area but one of the least densely populated; Helena is the capital, Billings the largest city, and Glacier National Park lies along the Canadian border.
Example: Fly-fishing guides in Bozeman, MT book up months before the season.
Mont. serves as the AP and traditional abbreviation. The postal code dates from 1963; MO is a frequent wrong guess, but that is Missouri, and MN is Minnesota. MT also abbreviates metric ton and Mount, and it is Malta's ISO country code.
2. Mount (Mt.)
Geography & Places · Geographic Feature Abbreviations
Shortens Mount before the name of an individual mountain and of towns named after mountains, as in Mt. Everest, Mt. Rainier or Mt. Pleasant. Mount comes before a name, while Mountain (Mtn.) follows it.
Example: The summit of Mt. Whitney is the highest point in the contiguous United States.
AP style spells Mount out in all uses, including place names such as Mount Vernon. USPS abbreviates Mount as MT in street and place names, and British style usually omits the period (Mt Kenya). Do not confuse Mt. with MT, Montana's postal code.
3. Megaton (TNT equivalent) (Mt)
Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations
A measure of explosive energy equal to one million tons of TNT, about 4.184 petajoules, used for thermonuclear weapons and large asteroid impacts. The largest bomb ever tested, the Soviet Tsar Bomba in 1961, yielded about 50 Mt.
Example: The 1961 Tsar Bomba test released roughly 50 Mt, about ten times all explosives used in World War II.
The TNT ton is a defined energy unit (10^9 calories, or 4.184 gigajoules) rather than an actual weight of explosive. Asteroid and meteor impacts are rated the same way; estimates for the 1908 Tunguska event mostly range from about 3 to 15 Mt. The same symbol also means megatonne of mass, so the surrounding text decides which is meant.
4. Megatonne (Mt)
Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations
One million tonnes, the scale used for mining output, national grain harvests, port cargo volumes and greenhouse gas emissions, where figures are often written MtCO2e.
Example: The port handled 85 Mt of cargo last year, mostly iron ore and coal.
Mt is the standard symbol in International Energy Agency and IPCC reports; a megatonne equals one teragram (Tg), which atmospheric scientists sometimes prefer. Global energy-related CO2 emissions are around 37,000 Mt (37 Gt) a year. Watch for lowercase mt, used loosely for metric ton on trade documents, and for Mt as the abbreviation for Mount in place names.
5. Mountain Time
Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations
Generic label for the US and Canadian Mountain Time Zone, covering MST (UTC−7) and MDT (UTC−6). Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Calgary and Edmonton use it, while most of Arizona stays on MST all year.
Example: Registration closes at midnight MT on Friday.
Because Arizona skips daylight saving, in summer Phoenix shares clock time with Los Angeles rather than Denver. The Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona does observe daylight saving, while the Hopi Reservation inside it does not, creating a time-zone "doughnut". MT also abbreviates Montana.
6. Manual transmission
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Transmission in which the driver selects gears with a shift lever and operates a clutch pedal, often called a stick shift. Car listings and spec sheets use MT, sometimes with the number of gears, such as 6MT.
Example: Selling my 2015 WRX, 6MT, new clutch at 80,000 miles, garage kept.
Manuals have nearly disappeared from new US cars, surviving mainly in sports cars where enthusiasts demand them. In the UK and Ireland, passing a driving test in an automatic restricts the licence to automatics. The "save the manuals" movement among enthusiasts celebrates the three-pedal driving experience. MT is also the postal abbreviation for Montana.
7. Mechanical thrombectomy
Medical · Neurology Abbreviations
Removal of an arterial clot with mechanical devices rather than drugs, most commonly describing stroke treatment for large vessel occlusion. Devices include stent retrievers, which trap the clot in a mesh, and large-bore aspiration catheters that suck it out.
Example: MT with stent retriever and aspiration, TICI 3 after two passes; post-procedure NIHSS 3.
Success is graded with the TICI or expanded TICI scale, where 2b or higher means meaningful reperfusion of the territory. The FDA first cleared stent retrievers, such as Solitaire and Trevo, for clot removal in 2012. MT and EVT are used interchangeably in stroke literature. Thrombectomy is also performed for pulmonary embolism and leg vein clots.
8. Malta
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Malta, capital Valletta, alpha-3 MLT, is the smallest EU member state by area and population. Maltese, a Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet, is an official EU language.
Example: Maltese IBANs begin with MT and run to 31 characters.
In US addresses MT is Montana, and mt can mean metric ton. Malta is a hub for online gaming licenses. The George Cross appears on its flag, awarded to the island in 1942.
9. Machine translation
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
Automatic translation of text or speech from one language to another by computer. Approaches have moved from rule-based systems through statistical models to neural networks and large language models.
Example: The first draft comes from MT, and a human translator post-edits it for publication.
The 1954 Georgetown-IBM experiment translated over 60 Russian sentences into English, prompting predictions that the problem would soon be solved; the 1966 ALPAC report judged progress disappointing, and funding fell. Translators speak of MTPE, machine translation post-editing. MT also abbreviates Montana and metric ton.
10. Missile Technician
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Submarine specialists who maintain and operate the strategic weapons systems of ballistic missile submarines, including the Trident II D5 missiles carried by Ohio-class boats, along with related launcher, fire-control and security equipment.
Example: MT1 Ward supervised the missile compartment checks during the strategic deterrent patrol.
Missile technicians serve on the boats that carry the sea-based leg of the US nuclear triad and hold among the strictest reliability requirements in the Navy. The rating also exists on guided-missile submarines (SSGN) that carry Tomahawk cruise missiles.
11. Masoretic Text
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
Authoritative Hebrew text of the Jewish Bible, copied and annotated with vowel points, accents and marginal notes by scholars called Masoretes between about the 7th and 10th centuries. It is the basis of most modern Old Testament translations.
Example: Most modern translations follow the MT, with footnotes for Septuagint readings.
The Aleppo Codex (about 930) and the Leningrad Codex (1008) are its most important manuscripts; the Leningrad Codex is the oldest complete one. Dead Sea Scrolls finds showed that the consonantal text was transmitted with remarkable accuracy. In other contexts MT means Montana or metric ton.
12. Meitnerium (Mt)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Meitnerium (element 109) is a synthetic element made only a few atoms at a time; its isotopes decay within seconds, so its chemistry is unexplored, though it is expected to resemble iridium, the element above it in group 9.
Example: A single Mt atom was identified in 1982 from its characteristic alpha-decay chain.
GSI Darmstadt created meitnerium in 1982 by bombarding bismuth-209 with iron-58. It honors Austrian-Swedish physicist Lise Meitner, who with Otto Frisch explained nuclear fission in 1939; Otto Hahn alone received the Nobel Prize for the discovery of fission. Meitnerium is the only element named solely after a real woman.
