IPCC stands for Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an environmental abbreviation also used in organizations.
United Nations body that assesses the science of climate change, its impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. Established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and UN Environment Programme, it publishes major assessment reports drawing on thousands of scientists' review of published research.
Example: The IPCC concluded that it is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land.
Usage notes
The IPCC does not conduct its own research; volunteer authors assess existing literature, and governments approve each Summary for Policymakers line by line. It shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. Its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) was completed in 2023, and its reports are labeled AR1 through AR6.
