1. Nitroglycerin
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Nitrate vasodilator used to relieve angina and treat acute heart failure and high blood pressure emergencies. It is given as sublingual tablets or spray, ointment, patches or continuous IV infusion.
Example: NTG 0.4 mg SL x 1 given, chest pain 7/10 to 2/10.
Nitroglycerin was first made as an explosive by Ascanio Sobrero in 1847, and its medical use for angina was described in 1879. Combined with PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil or tadalafil it can cause severe hypotension, so it is withheld for 24 to 48 hours after those drugs. Sublingual tablets lose potency once the bottle is opened and should be replaced regularly.
2. Normal-tension glaucoma
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Form of open-angle glaucoma in which optic nerve damage and visual field loss occur even though eye pressure stays in the normal range. Lowering pressure further still slows progression.
Example: NTG with disc hemorrhage OS, IOP 15; target 30 percent reduction, start SLT.
The Collaborative Normal-Tension Glaucoma Study (1998) showed that a 30 percent pressure reduction slowed progression. NTG is particularly common in Japan and among people of East Asian ancestry. Low blood pressure at night and migraine may be risk factors. In cardiology NTG means nitroglycerin.
