NTX stands for Naltrexone, a drug abbreviation.
Opioid receptor antagonist used to treat alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder, taken as a 50 mg daily tablet or a monthly 380 mg intramuscular injection (Vivitrol, often written XR-NTX).
Example: Start NTX 50 mg PO daily for alcohol use disorder; LFTs normal.
Usage notes
Patients must be free of opioids for about 7 to 10 days before starting, or naltrexone will trigger withdrawal. It reduces heavy drinking by blunting the reward of alcohol. Unlike naloxone, which reverses overdoses within minutes, naltrexone is long-acting and used for prevention, and after stopping it people may be more sensitive to opioids.
